Bullied as a child
When McGregor was growing up, he got into quite a few fights and that’s why he wanted to learn how to protect himself. After those experiences, McGregor took up Kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu lessons in order to learn every way to defend himself and be comfortable in any situation. Due to these issues throughout his childhood, McGregor now attends seminars in schools giving lectures for anti-bullying movements.
Almost became a plumber
In an interview with Men’s Health, Conor revealed that his father tried to persuade him to carry on with his plumber job instead of looking to be a full-time fighter. He actually trained as a plumber during his early 20s, but after less than a year he decided the life of a plumber wasn’t for him. In an interview with MMA magazine Bloody Elbow, McGregor’s father said “It was a Monday morning, I went in to wake him up and I just remember him peering out from under his blanket and saying, ‘Look, this isn’t for me’. That’s when he decided to seriously pursue a career as a fighter.”
He owns everything to his girlfriend Dee Devlin
McGregor has frequently mentioned the importance of his girlfriend Dee in helping and supporting him achieve his success. “My girlfriend has been there since the start. She helped me throughout my entire career. If it wasn’t for her, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.” Dee stood by him when Conor was earning just about $100 a fight. She even quit her job sometime in the last years to work full-time for Conor. She is officially a member of his team and when she is not screaming from the stands, she is managing his finances. Furthermore, the Irish couple announced the birth of their son Conor Jack McGregor two months ago, and the newborn is the main reason for McGregor’s recent absence from the UFC.
He was signed by the UFC without president Dana White seeing him in action
McGregor wasn’t on Dana White’s radar, but the fans began hounding the UFC President to sign the Irish fighter. White flew McGregor to Las Vegas for a meeting and the UFC signed McGregor to a five-fight deal. He never saw McGregor fight prior to signing him, but he referred to the Irish fighter as a “penny stock” that worked out beyond his wildest dreams. McGregor became the biggest name in the UFC, with White saying that “He is the biggest thing ever to happen both the UFC and the sport of MMA. He Holds records for the biggest PPV and gate receipts in UFC history.”
McGregor’s shoes need passports
When McGregor travels for fights, he always needs to carry a passport for his shoes. He has several pairs of shoes that need their own passports due to America’s laws, as the shoes are made from python or crocodile skin. He said, “I’ve never owned a pair of $1k Crocodile shoes, so the news that they require their own passport to board an aeroplane was new to me.”
